New reports that two people suffered serious injuries in a motorcycle/car crash in Waimanalo. The incident occurred near the intersection of Mahailua Street and Waikupanaha Street. A young girl sustained serious injuries, while the driver of the motorcyclist, a 30-year-old man sustained critical injuries requiring life-saving treatment on the scene. The two are still recovering in the hospital. The incident remains under investigation.
Riding a motorcycle is inherently dangerous. Even where all safety precautions are followed, when a collision occurs between a motorcycle and another motorized vehicle, the result can be deadly.
Some tips for motorcyclists to improve safety include:
- Avoid distracted driving
- Obey the rules of the road
- Check the weather conditions before heading out. Weather can change in an instant, and slick roads/strong winds can be hazardous for drivers; and
- Always dress for safety. This includes wearing protective clothing and a helmet.
Drivers of other vehicles need to be on the lookout as well and share the road with motorcyclists. Motorcycles are a very popular mode of transportation in Hawaii and it is critical that drivers pay attention to the roads around them.
