Paddling Champion Killed in Hawaii Auto Accident

A stand-up paddling champion has been identified as the victim of a single car accident. According to Hawaii News Now, the woman who was a graduate of the University of Hawaii was the passenger in a white pick-up truck that was traveling on Waialua Beach Road toward Kahuku. An initial investigation reveals that the driver was speeding, lost control of the vehicle, crossed the center line and crashed into a mango tree. He was also arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.

This tragedy is a reminder of the dangers of any type of reckless driving. Reckless driving includes driving under the influence, distracted driving and speeding.

Where the recklessness leads to a serious injury or death, the perpetrator may face both civil and criminal charges. In this instance, the driver has been charged with first-degree negligent homicide. Further, the family of the victim may be able to file a civil wrongful death lawsuit arising out of the incident.

This accident marks Oahu's third fatal accident of the year, equaling the number of accidents as last year.
