Hawaii news reports that a jogger was killed while crossing the Kalanianaole Highway. According to Khon2, the woman was crossing the road just west of Wailupe Beach Park when she was struck by a vehicle. The impact pushed her into the roadway, where she was run over by a second vehicle.
The drivers were not injured and neither speed nor alcohol appear to be factors. However, police are looking into a variety of different types of potential distractions. While most often people think of "distracted driving" as texting or cell phone use, it includes any action that takes your eyes off the road, where you're not paying attention to the roadway, looking forward or paying attention to where you're headed.
A spokesperson for the police noted, "even though you think you take your eyes off the road for just a second, it really can be a deadly mistake."
Further, pursuant to Hawaii law, not only is texting and driving is illegal, but you may also get a ticket if distracted driving leads to an accident — anything from putting on makeup to eating and even rubber-necking.
