Hawaii News reports that three pedestrians remain in serious condition following a major accident this past weekend. According to reports, three individuals were allegedly hit by a drunk driver while they were walking near Laniakea Beach. The driver reportedly left the scene, but was later apprehended and arrested for driving under the influence and failing to stop to render aid.
Car accidents remain one of the leading causes of injury and death in Hawaii and throughout the United States. In fact, more than 250,000 people are injured each year in some form of automobile accident. If you or some one you love has been hurt in a car accident, it is important to consult with an experienced Hawaii personal injury attorney at once.
The leading causes of car accidents include drunk driving and driver distraction. Driver distraction can occur in any number of ways – eating, talking, or even changing the radio station. However, the most common and dangerous form of distraction is cell phone use – whether talking or texting. When drivers take their eyes off the road to respond to a text it may be nearly impossible for them to react to conditions of the road. This may lead to accidents where the driver swerves into traffic, follows too closely behind another vehicle or fails to break for pedestrians.
Another cause of accidents that often ends in tragedy is drinking and driving. Intoxicated drivers are impaired drivers. Those who drink and drive may face both criminal charges for DUI and civil penalties for negligently operating their vehicles.
