Hawaii news reports that Maui police are investigating a Makawao moped accident that nearly killed a 36-year-old Hawaii man. According to reports, the man was struck by a pick up truck and sustained serious personal injuries. He was not wearing a helmet at the time.
Motorcycle and moped crashes are some of Hawaii's most dangerous motor vehicle accidents. Because little separates a rider from the road when an accident occurs, the results are often serious, and in the worst case, fatal.
Some tips for avoiding serious injuries as the result of motorcycle or moped accidents include:
• Always wear a helmet. Wearing a helmet can help protect you from serious head and brain injuries in the event of an accident.
• Avoid distracted driving/riding. Pay attention while on the road. Not only is it important that you maintain focus on the roadway, but you need to ride defensively to stay clear of other drivers who may "drive distracted" and not see you on the roadway.
• Follow the rules of the road. It is also important to obey the rules of the road. This means avoiding reckless driving – such as speeding or driving too fast for the conditions - or driving while under the influence.
It is unknown what factors played a role in this particular accident. For more information, or if you or a loved one have been injured in a motorcycle crash, please contact the experienced Hawaii personal injury lawyers at Bostwick & Peterson, LLP for an immediate consultation.
